This summer the Belgian De Werf label released Electric Barbarian’s third album (Barb Wire). Bassist Floris Vermeulen’s band still brings its unique blend of spoken word and drum ’n bass. The texts and poems of Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes (1902-1967) receive a hefty dose of adrenaline in the hands of scratcher Grazzhoppa. And the beats, plus live drummer Harry Arling take care of the hard swing. The new string section, featuring stars Mary Oliver (ICP Orchestra), Monica Germino (with her electric Violectra) and cellist Lode Vercampt, is completely embedded in Vermeulen’s music and improvises like lions. Another new band member is Jozef Dumoulin, who adds his own touch on Fender Rhodes. And the band’s trump is trumpeter Bart Maris, Belgium’s answer to Lester Bowie.
