SUMMERJAZZCYCLETOUR 2012

INTRO

The last Saturday in August sees the start of the 26th edition of the  SummerJazzCycleTour (SJCT). A beautiful route will take you through the Reitdiep valley, to the northwest of the city of Groningen, and offers you 25 concerts in medieval churches and farmers’  barns. The cycling fest offers a varied international programme with contemporary jazz and improvised music from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the US. This edition also introduces a special theme with music from Scandinavia in the Nordic Route. It’s a tired and tested concept of discovering new jazz on bike.

The SummerJazzCycleTour presents the Nordic routewith two leading groups: Atomic and Zanussi Five. Both outfits have been active for over ten years and play an important role in the lively Scandinavian jazz scene. Danish guitarist Hasse Poulsen will perform compositions by Hanns Eisler with his band Das Kapital. The Swedish/Norwegian duo Håkon Kornstad / Ingebrigt Håker Flatenwill take on ancient Norwegian hymns. The Danish bassist Joel Grip can be heard with musicians from Paris and Berlin. NL/NO Duo’s sees Michael Moore and Eric Boerenperform with Per Zanussi and André Roligheten from Norway.

We also see special collaborations in the new Boston duo of Jorrit Dijkstra / Pandelis Karayorgis or the New York duo Ingrid Laubrock / Tom Raineywho will encounter bassist Wilbert de Joode voor het eerst gaan ontmoeten. The amazing Berlin trumpeter Axel Dörnercan be heard with the Ab Baars / Ig Henneman duo.

In addition to a number of SJCT stalwarts like Sean Bergin, Tobias Delius, Han Bennink Tobias Delius and Han Bennink you will also meet some new facesfrom the NL jazz scene: pianist Tony Roe in Oene van Geel’s new group OOOO, the guitarists Reinier Baas (duo with Joris Roelofs) and Jasper Stadhouders (Spinifex Quintet), French horn player Morris Kliphuis (Kapok) and the ‘super jazz’ of Bruut! The Dutch Impro Academyis present once again  with a new flock of young improvisers. And what to think of the youngest Belgian jazz sensation, De Beren Gieren? Also from Belgium: trumpeter Bart Maris, keyboard player Jozef Dumoulin and scratcher Grazzhoppa with Electric Barbarian, Floris Vermeulen’s successful project, which also features a  phenomenal string section (including Mary Oliver, Monica Germino and Lode Vercampt).

In The Noo Ones, one of the most appealing projects from the Music World Series, percussionist Alan Purves gets a chance to combiner his Scottish roots with other musical cultures. Vocalist Han Buhrs’s solo performance is also something special. Remarkable is alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade’s SJCT debut, in combination with pianist Stevko Busch.

The programme of the 26th edition also includes guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen’s twelve piece band Corrie en de Grote Brokkenand the monster project Cows in Space, a.k.a. Frans Vermeerssen and Robert Vermeulen’s  quartet Talking Cows with the fifty piece brass band Frysk Fanfare Orkest.

This year’s finale features the band Maison du Malheurplaying cheerful roots music. The tent across from the windmill in Garnwerd is the place to exchange jazz experiences and cycling stories. For 25 acts in one day is too much for the jazz cycler. Sometimes fantastic bands play miles apart at the same moment. The SummerJazzCycleTour takes some preparation. Have fun with your homework. We wish you success in picking your route. And as the trumpet in the poster indicates: make sure your front and rear light are in working order.
Once again we would like to thank all of the volunteers who will be active on this last Saturday in August.

CORRIe
en De

GROTe BROKKen

Guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen is a busy woman. Her Brokken Weekends in Amsterdam are a great success, as are her combinations of music and literature. In addition to the Van Binsbergen Quartet the Grote Brokken regularly meet. Last year Corrie en de Grote Brokken undertook an anniversary tour, for Van Binsbergen had been ‘Brokking’ for 25 years. Twelve musicians from the NL pop and jazz scenes still make a powerful impression. ‘Corrie en de Grote Brokken’s music is whimsical, expressive, humoristic; she stomps and swings and comfortably rubs against the Frank Zappa idiom. And you can laugh your head off.‘ (jazz critic Eddy Determeijer)
