29 augustus Groningen
This year the Prologue takes place at the Platformtheater on the Groningen Boterdiep. It features an indoor parking next door, very handy. And inside there’s a cosy club atmosphere. An excellent setting for seasoned performer Maggie Nicols from England. And also a wonderful place for the exciting Middle Eastern grooves by Brooklyn’s Xalam trio.
Later that evening the Noorderzon festival, in the nearby Noorderplantsoen park, features the Sicilian group Manziluna, giving the audience a taste of what’s to come in the SummerJazzCycleTour’s Italian route.

The Sicilian quintet Manziluna has a Groningen connection. Guitarist Leonardo Grimaudo programmes special late night concerts at the Il Sole in Cantina club in the Groningen city centre. Manziluna’s music combines the typical Italian light-footedness with strong melodies. The remarkable absence of a bassist is more than compensated by two well teamed-up guitarists.

Eric Boeren is best known for his work with Available Jelly and All Ellington. The cornetist has also been making a name for himself with his own 4tet, featuring Michael Moore and Han Bennink, in which he provides Ornette Coleman’s catchy compositions with a new coat of varnish. For the SummerJazzCycleTour Eric Boeren has assembled a special new quintet featuring the French vocalist Marie Guilleray, who will recite poetry by the Dutch poet and painter Lucebert.

Joëlle Léandre is joined by the extremely talented cellist Vincent Courtois, best known in the Netherlands for his work with Louis Sclavis.

His new Horizon Trio once again proves how inspiring Eastern European and associated music is to Steven Kamperman. He is joined by the Turkish singer Sanem Kalfa and the Romanian guitarist and violinist George Dumitriu, two great musicians who have the perfect feel for his compositions.

Ever since guitarist Anton Goudsmit left the New Cool Collective he has been a free man. And he immediately took off on a stormy trip with the raw new power trio Goudsmit/Bakker/Jäger. The raucous rhythm section, consisting of Arno Bakker on sousaphone (Maison du Malheur, De Jongens Driest) and drummer Gerri Jäger (Knalpot), provides the guitarist with enough fuel to burn once again in this new band.

If you want to experience the personal choices by this Sicilian duo first-hand, make sure you are on time, for the Harkema miniature church doesn’t have a lot of seats.

The clarinettist from Undine presents his new trio Ultramarine featuring the unusual combination of guitar or banjo plus marimba. Intimate, passionate, sometimes quiet music to dream away by.

Her performance and interpretation of well-known songs is still as impressive as ever. Maggie Nicols takes two excellent French musicians along: guitarist David Chevallier (Tous Dehors, Yves Robert) and drummer Denis Charolles (La Campagnie des Musiques à Ouïr).

What is more fun than one accordion? The Belgian duo Tuur Florizoone/Didier Laloy brings together various musical worlds. One of the guys plays chromatically, the other diatonically. Jazz and improvisation versus folk and grooves. The result is lyrical, free, but also virtuoso and above all a great celebration of opposites. Last year Tuur Florizoone performed with Eric Vloeimans’s Oliver’s Cinema to a raving audience.

When his colleague Simon Vinkenoog once asked Lucebert what he would consider to be the meaning of the Vijftigers artist movement, Lucebert replied with the titles of a series of jazz standards. Thus we get to hear Better Get it in Your Soul (Charles Mingus), Hot House (Tadd Dameron) and The Stratus Seekers (George Russell) in a fiery Braam treatment.

The pianist from The Hague returns to Cycling Tour country this year with the Swiss vocalist Susanne Abbuehl. Both are ECM recording artists and their music is sensitive and meditative. Together with the French pianist Stephan Oliva Susanne Abbuehl performs beautiful songs by Don Cherry. We are curious whether these tunes will be on the repertoire in Ezinge.

His associates at the time were Gianni Gebbia (performing at the Harkema church this year) and trumpeter Roy Paci. That’s 14 years ago…. He now returns for the Italian route, and this time with The Assassins, a quartet from Bologna. They make a sort of Batman jazz on speed, caused by the zany tempos and the wonderful throb of the Hammond organ.

With musical jacks-of-all-trades Bart Maris (FES, Synaesthetic Trip, Electric Barbarian) and Jan Klare (The Dorf, Das Böse Ding) the band has a front line of two energetic horn players. Will he attempt it again? Does he secretly hope for a sequel? This time his guest is Michiel Scheen, the pianist with whom Delius has a duo that is unfortunately seldom heard. Maybe they will include a drummer next year?

The great ud player Brandon Terzic recorded the CD Xalam Project in 2011 with the versatile reedist Matt Darriau (Klezmatics, Paradox Trio) and the brilliant percussionist Matt Kilmer. Matt Darriau performed at the SJCT before, with the De Jongens Driest Brass Quintet.

Snijders, well-known for his ultra-short columns. Albert van Veenendaal, the prepared piano specialist, and Alan Purves, the Scottish percussion beast recently recorded the CD ‘and the cowgirls kept on dancing’ as Two Al’s. In 2001 the Amsterdam Klezmer Band wrought havoc in Dick’s barn. Who would have thought their joyful klezmer polka would ever get a remix by star producer Shantel? The band has recorded eight albums by now and has been racing around the European festival circuit. The Amsterdam Klezmer Band, still in its original line-up, will undoubtedly get the Garnwerd festival tent moving.
