TRIO AMARCO ALFRED SPIRLI / ALAN PURVES TRIO MONNIOT / SZANDAI / QUITZKE

The eve of the SummerJazzCycleTour brings a French Prologue to the Groningen Grand Theatre. The Prologue will give you a preview of three French acts that will be part of the SJCT’s very own Tour de France: improvised music by the great Claude Tchamitchian string trio, Trio Amarco, to be followed by a percussive intermezzo: a first encounter of two more than extraordinary percussionists: Alfred Spirli from Lyon and Scotsman Alan Gunga Purves. The spectacular finale of the evening will be brought to you by the new trio of saxophonist and natural born performer Christophe Monniot.

ENVER IZMAILOV

(Ukraine)

Enver Izmailov is a pioneer of the finger tapping technique, in which the fingerboard of the guitar is played with all ten fingers. He developed this style for solo concerts, completely unaware of the fact that in other parts of the world guitarists like Stanley Jordan and Fred Frith were doing the same thing. Izmailov is originally from Uzbekistan, but currently lives in Crimea on the Black Sea. The unorthodox guitarist gives his own personal interpretation of the musical folklore of the Caucasus, Central Asia en Bulgaria.

(NL/G/ISR/Poland/Bulgaria/Spain/Trinidad)

Specially for last year’s Grand Theatre’s soundofmusic festival Michael Moore assembled a fantastic group of students from the Groningen Prins Claus Conservatory, where he teaches. The ICP Orchestra and Available Jelly reedist got them to work on Dutch jazz classics from the Amsterdam Real Book. Incidentally Michael Moore played a major role in compiling this Amsterdam Real Book, a collection of Dutch jazz standards by Misha Mengelberg, Guus Janssen, Tristan Honsinger, Sean Bergin and many others. The result is a fresh look at 40 years of recent Amsterdam jazz history.

Christophe Monniot was part of the illustrious La Campagnie des Musiques à Ouïr, the cheerful French trio which opened the very first Prologue of the 15th SummerJazzCycleTour at the Groninger Museum. The adventurous saxophonist is nowadays causing quite a stir with his own trio. He bares French chansons and jazz standards to the bone and adds a sultry touch of his own. The perfect performer to kick off the SJCT’s very own Tour de France at the beautifully restored church in Leegkerk.

Tiltan’s music is a great mix of folklore and Israeli guitarist David Golek’s compositions. The international, Amsterdam based quartet includes clarinettist Natalio Sued (Argentina), Moldavia born Oleg Fateev on bayan (a Russian button accordion) and the recent laureate of the VPRO Boy Edgar Prijs (the major Dutch jazz award) Oene van Geel on viola. In his pieces David leaves ample room for improvisations, making use of his band members’ impressive individual qualities. Alfred Spirli is a member of the French musicians’ collective ARFI in Lyon. He performed at the 2000 SJCT with the band L’Effet Vapeur. In 1953 John Engels (1935) started making money as a drummer. He performed with local heroes like Kid Dynamite and the Diamond Five as well as Chet Baker, of whom he has fond memories. The most experienced Dutch jazz drummer has been a professional for 60 years now. We celebrate this with an anniversary concert by the Barnicle Bill Trio, in which he is joined by two young Turks: alto saxophonist Miguel Martinez and bass guitarist Mark Haanstra. The book contains a wide-ranging repertoire by Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman alike. The guest performance by trombonist Wolter Wierbos is rather special. It is the first time he meets the guys from Barnicle Bill.

Daunik Lazro is an improviser par excellence. Having started on alto sax he now specializes in solo concerts on baritone sax, from which he manages to lure the most unusual sounds. The structure of his solos is phenomenal. His solo albums are always released by Claude Tchamitchian’s Emouvance label. Lazro made a good move in the late 1980s when he picked up the then young Michel Doneda and Lê Quan Ninh. Daunik Lazro worked with improvising musicians like Joëlle Léandre, Carlos Zingaro and Joe McPhee. Solo baritone sax in Harkema’s miniature church, a treat for connoisseurs.

With its debut album Treiffel the Chris Corstens Quartet hits the nail on the head. Wonderfully bouncy jazz pieces featuring Oscar Jan Hoogland’s Misha Mengelberg-like piano style. Harald Austbø’s five string cello makes the music all the more flexible. ‘It’s a true pleasure to listen to saxophonist Chris Corstens’, says critic Rinus van der Heyden (Jazzenzo). ‘...just enough quirky Dutch elements to leave a smile on your face, but the musicians never overdo it’ are the opening words of a rave review by Dave Lynch (Allmusic). Bassist Vladimir Volkov is best known for his work with the crossover group Vershki Da Koreshki (later VeDaKi) featuring the Senegalese vocalist Mola Sylla side by side with a throat singer from Tuva. Since 1995 the bassist has been running his Volkovtrio, a heavy power band which has developed an intensive approach to music which will blow away the listener. A Tour de France shouldn’t be without bassist Claude Tchamitchian. He made a great impression with a solo concert in Feerwerd in 2010. Three years later he returns with a fantastic string trio, Trio Amarco. On the eponymous CD Amarco (Emouvance) Tchamitchian manages to achieve the same intensity with which he performed his solo concert. Tchamitchian’s powerful, yet crystal-clear compositions work wonders for string trio and with the acoustics of the Den Ham church the subtle improvisations will sound even more exciting. Highly recommended for lovers of pizzicato and arco string music.

Update: Misha Alperin is absent for reasons of ill-health, accordionist/vocalist Evelyn Petrova will be giving a soloconcert

Pianist Misha (Mikhail) Alperin has been a member of the Moscow Art Trio for nearly 25 years. The trio laid the foundation for the fusion of Russian folklore and the improvisation models of jazz. Alperin’s own music is released ECM label (he recorded with John Surman). A new album with vocalist/accordionist Evelyn Petrova is in preparation. Evelyn Petrova also improvises on ideas from Russian folklore. In Petrova’s solo set at the 2006 SJCT her vocal contributions offered the listener an imaginary trip across Russian landscapes, commenting on them with her own accordion musings. Accordion and tuba is an unusual combination. Alain Bruel and François Thuillier use it to make new musette music. It is a typical French mix of the ancient musette and other folk influences with jazz. Again we see two virtuosos who master their instruments to perfection. It allows them to go whichever way the music may lead them. Jazz cyclists who boast of an iron memory will know that tubist François Thuillier performed at the 1998 SJCT with his Thuillier Brass Trio. Quiz question: who were his fellow musicians in his second performance that year?
