INTRO

The last Saturday in August sees the start of the 27th edition of the ZomerJazzFietsTour (SummerJazzCycleTour). A beautiful route will take you through the Reitdiep valley, to the northwest of the city of Groningen, and offers you 26 concerts in medieval churches and farmers’ barns. The cycling fest offers a varied international programme with contemporary jazz and improvised music. We like to say that it’s a tried and tested concept of discovering new jazz on bike. For this musical outing in a beautiful part of the province of Groningen is gathering a growing number of jazz cyclists.

The three cycling routes offer special themes: the Tour de France with music from the lively French jazz scene and the Russian Route featuring a choice of adventurous musicians from Russia and its neighbouring countries. The Sena Route presents specials with Eric Vloeimans and Oscar Jan Hoogland. Or you may take the fourth route, the RWN a.k.a. Route Without a Name which has no particular musical theme.

The Tour de Francehas a flying start in Leegkerk with saxophonist Christophe Monniot’s new trio. A playful meeting between the two extraordinary percussionists Alfred Spirli and Alan Purves will lead you to the exceptional baritone saxophonist Daunik Lazro at the Harkema miniature church, or to the odd ones out: the British rhythm tandem Olie Brice and Mark Sanders, who have invited Tobias Delius from Berlin to join them for a trio in Fransum. Off to Den Ham for Amarco, bassist Claude Tchamitchian’s string trio. Then take the shortcut to Feerwerd, where drummer Edward Perraud (the percussionist of last year’s highlight Das Kapital) will present his new super band Synaesthetic Trip. The French route will conclude with some New Musette by the Alain Bruel/François Thuillier duo in Garnwerd.

The Russian Route kicks off at Noorderhoogebrug with a single solo set by the phenomenal guitarist Enver Izmailov. Tiltan in Adorp is an Amsterdam based quartet featuring the Moldavian bayan player Oleg Fateef and Boy Edgar Prijs winner Oene van Geel. The great Simon Nabatov/Nils Wogram duo awaits you in Oostum, after which you may have your ears cleansed by bassist Vladimir Volkov and his Volkovtrio at a new location close to the curve at Garnwerd, the Krassum barn. At the Garnwerd tent we meet Enver Izmailov once again, this time as a member of the Black Sea Trio featuring saxophonist Anatoly Vapirov. Then it’s off to Ezinge for the final Russian duo: vocalist/ accordionist Evelyn Petrova and pianist Misha Alperin (Moscow Art Trio). The internationally successful trio Ernst Reijseger/Harmen Fraanje/Mola Sylla will perform in the always jam-packed final concert at the Garnwerd church.

The Sena Route will present two specials: the Vloeimans Special featuring Eric Vloeimans playing the trumpet at the Aduard church starting point in a trio with Jörg Brinkmann and Tuur Florizoone and as soloist/composer/band leader with the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (Dutch Youth Jazz Orchestra). The Hoogland Special focuses on pianist Oscar Jan Hoogland who is featured in three ensembles: the Chris Corstens Quartet, All Ellington and his famous Bakfietsband (Transport bike band). We will also celebrate John Engels’s 60th anniversary as a jazz drummer, with a performance by the Barnicle Bill Trio with special guest trombonist Wolter Wierbos. In collaboration with the Noorderzon festival we will also present Groningen guitarist Dick Rusticus’s new quintet.

The Route Without a Name is filled to the brim with talented jazz musicians. At one of the starting locations, the Garnwerd tent, reedist Michael Moore will lead students of the Groningen Prins Claus Conservatory in his Michael Moore Pool. A new element is the early concert at Hans’s barn in Feerwerd, featuring Vlek, the scintillating house band of the Tilburg jazz club Paradox, filled with Brabant based jazz greats. Han Bennink and the Dutch Impro Academy are present in Ezinge with a new class of international musicians. The nameless route will then lead you past the colourful Black Sea Trio in Garnwerd to Feerwerd for the grand NJJO & Eric Vloeimans and the surprising Synaesthetic Trip featuring pianist Benoît Delbecq and trumpeter Bart Maris.

At the Garnwerd tent the swinging Amsterdam funk band The Jig will make sure the SummerJazzCycleTour 2013 will go out with a bang. The tent, across the windmill, is the place to be to shrug off all of the folklore and do some heavy funking.

And finally we would like to thank the many SJCT volunteers who will be active on this last Saturday in August.
