Before the New York multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle gained a cult status in the early eighties he was homeless for a number of years. Gayle's emotional scream on the tenor sax contrasts sharply with his lyrical piano playing. Swiss piano great Irene Schweizer explores South African jazz roots in her Where's Africa Trio. It features happy-go-lucky kwela tunes as well as tender pieces by Abdullah Ibrahim.

INTRO

A musical cycling adventure amidst the beautiful landscape of the Reitdiep valley with performances in medieval churches and farmers' barns. A cycling feast with a varied international programme of contemporary jazz and improvised music. The 24th SummerJazzCycleTour is a tested and tried concept to explore new jazz on bike.

In this edition tubas and trombones will receive special attention. Great musicians playing brass instruments can be heard on the Brass Route, cycling route 3, starting with tubist Goran Krmac (Dorkwerd), via two tuba solo concerts by Carl Ludwig Hübsch (Harkema) and Oren Marshall (Oostum) respectively to trombonist Wolter Wierbos (Feerwerd church) and the trombone duo Conrad Bauer/Johannes Bauer (in the new location Allersmaborg), and at the end of the Brass Route a smashing finale with two tubas in the Spinifex Tuba Band (Feerwerd barn Dick). Cycling route 3 is the only one with a musical theme.

The SummerJazzCycleTour 2010 also offers the opportunity to focus one’s hearing on some exceptional pianists: Boelo Klat (Klatwerk 3), Bojan Zulfikarpasic (with Eric Vloeimans), Oscar Jan Hoogland (EKE), Wolfert Brederode (with Claudio Puntin), Gideon van Gelder (with a carte blanche trio), Dimitar Bodurov (Bodurov Trio), Harmen Fraanje (Michael Moore Fragile Quartet), Irene Schweizer (Where’s Africa Trio) and Charles Gayle (with Han Bennink).
The pianists are all in the wild, and not brought together in a particular route. You can pick your own track The jazz cycler does not have to limit himself to the routes. When you do go for the security of a cycling route, a summary of the routes can be found elsewhere on this site.

The SummerJazzCycleTour is a cycling feast with a varied international programme of contemporary jazz and improvisation music. This festival edition presents musicians from Germany, Switzerland, France, the United States and the Netherlands. Here are the statistics:
Germany: Furiopolis, Silke Eberhard’s Potsa Lotsa, The Dorf, Duo Bauer/Bauer, Carl Ludwig Hübsch
Switzerland: Irene Schweizer Where’s Africa Trio, Tré Fundamental Music, Claudio Puntin
France: Claude Tchamitchian, Bojan Zulfikarpasic
England: Phil Minton, Oren Marshall
America: Charles Gayle, Eugene Chadbourne
International: Dutch Impro Academy, Dimitar Bodurov Trio, Electric Barbarian, Kaas Kwartet
Netherlands: Han Bennink, Eric Vloeimans, Michael Moore Fragile Quartet, EKE, Wolfert Brederode, Duo Wolter Wierbos/Wilbert De Joode, Gideon van Gelder Trio
Hometown Groningen: Electric Barbarian, Goran Krmac/Vincent Veneman, Klatwerk 3

27 concerts in one day is far too much for one pair of ears. The route scheme is an attempt at ordering the programme choices.

Once again we would like to thank the many SummerJazzCycleTour volunteers who will be active on this last Saturday in August. Without their enthusiasm and energy the SummerJazzCycleTour would only be a form of vicious cycling.
